THANE: A domestic dispute over a saree allegedly culminated in a murder in Badlapur East, where a 30-year-old woman has been arrested for the death of her husband. Sunita Hariram Singh, 30, was taken into custody on Tuesday after investigators identified inconsistencies in her account of the events surrounding her husband’s death.
The victim, Hariram Kishunji Singh, 35, died at the couple’s rented home on July 19. Both originally from Rohtas district in Bihar, the couple had been residing in Badlapur for the past nine years with their seven-year-old son.
According to the investigation, an argument erupted when Hariram allegedly failed to bring home sarees for Sunita. The verbal dispute escalated into violence. During the altercation, their young son reportedly ran to the landlord’s house to seek help in stopping the fight. Unfortunately, before anyone could intervene, Sunita allegedly attacked her husband with the lid of a pressure cooker and then strangled him to death.
In an attempt to conceal the crime, Sunita informed the landlord that Hariram had suffered a heart attack following their argument. Based on her statement, police initially registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR).
Senior Police Inspector Nitin Patil of the Badlapur East police station stated that the post-mortem examination raised suspicions when doctors discovered injuries inconsistent with a natural death. “Initially, the woman claimed her husband had died of a heart attack following a quarrel. However, the autopsy confirmed that he had been murdered. We then registered an FIR for murder, and during questioning, the accused confessed to killing her husband,” Patil said.
Sunita has been charged under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and further investigation is ongoing. The couple’s seven-year-old son is currently being cared for by relatives, according to police.
