The Centre informed the Delhi High Court on Tuesday that it does not object to activist Sonam Wangchuk being transferred from Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram for further treatment. However, the government emphasized that the transfer should occur only after doctors approve his discharge, rather than at Wangchuk’s request.
During the hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta stated, “If Sonam Wangchuk is shifted from Safdarjung Hospital to Medanta, the government has no objection. However, he should be discharged from the hospital based on the advice of Medanta’s doctors and not on his own wishes.” The Centre reiterated that the decision regarding his discharge should be guided solely by medical opinion to ensure Wangchuk’s safety and well-being.
Mehta also raised concerns about individuals surrounding Wangchuk, indicating that some were attempting to remove him from the hospital without considering his medical condition. He remarked, “The people around him want him out irrespective of his health.”
Delhi High Court Reserves Order
After hearing submissions from all parties, the Delhi High Court announced it would deliver its order at 2:30 pm. The court is expected to determine whether Wangchuk can be transferred to Medanta Hospital and the conditions under which this transfer might occur. Dr. Lamba, one of Wangchuk’s treating doctors, attended the hearing as the court addressed matters related to the activist’s health.
Appeal Challenges Single Judge’s Order
This development follows an appeal filed by Gitanjali Angmo, Wangchuk’s wife, who has contested an earlier ruling by a single judge that denied the request to transfer Wangchuk to Medanta Hospital. The Division Bench of the Delhi High Court is currently reviewing the appeal for the transfer permission.
Wangchuk Under Medical Supervision
Sonam Wangchuk is currently receiving treatment at Safdarjung Hospital after being admitted during his ongoing hunger strike related to the NEET issue. As per the latest medical updates from the hospital, he remains under the supervision of a multidisciplinary team of doctors who are closely monitoring his condition. A health bulletin issued on Monday evening reported that Wangchuk’s vital medical parameters are stable, although continuous observation is necessary to prevent any complications.
